Apricot Purple –

Origin & Breeding History

Apricot Purple originates from a unique chimera that emerged in 1998 during early experiments grafting annual hops onto cannabis. One grafted hops seedling fused with the cannabis stem; although the hops portion died, the graft union produced a new shoot with unusual sessile, smooth-edged, single leaves—a completely atypical trait for cannabis.

At that time, concepts such as horizontal gene transfer or graft-induced chimeras were largely unknown, leaving the mutation unexplained. Over the following years, this leaf mutation reappeared sporadically within thousands of offspring. Through careful selection, the line progressed from:

  • Apricot Delia
  • the colorful variant AD17
  • to the stabilized phenotype Apricot Purple

Some individuals later misrepresented this mutation as a “Russian landrace.” In reality, both related mutations originate exclusively from Kalyseeds and form part of the breeding material established through meticulous work since 2007.

Genetics & Lineage

Apricot Purple is a selected expression from the Apricot Delia mutation pool, characterized by:

  • Sessile single leaves (smooth-edged, lanceolate)
  • Purple to blackish pigmentation
  • Fruity aroma with blackberry dominance

Related line: Lollipop (Kalyseeds), with Blueberry Vaniluna Kush contributing to its genetics.

Aroma & Flavor

  • Primary aroma: Blackberry / dark berries
  • Secondary notes: Apricot, soft floral hints
  • Flavor: Rich, fruity, smooth
  • Smoke: Mild and berry-sweet, with subtle Kush undertones

Growth & Morphology

Growth Structure

  • In clusters: forms a dense, strong hedge with excellent wind resistance
  • As a single plant: displays a Mexican Sativa-like phenotype
  • General appearance reminiscent of a bamboo hedge

Leaves

  • Sessile, growing directly from the stem
  • Single, smooth-edged leaves, a hallmark of the mutation

Flowers

  • Long, foxtail-like colas
  • Coloration ranges from purple to deep black-purple
  • Good resin production with enhanced aroma expression
  • Airier structure reduces risk of mold

Resistance & Outdoor Performance

Exceptional outdoor resilience:

  • Pest-resistant
  • Fungus- and mold-resistant
  • Storm- and wind-resistant
  • Rainproof
  • Heat- and drought-tolerant

Apricot Purple thrives particularly well in tight group plantings, forming a robust, self-supporting structure.

Special Characteristics

  • Rare chimera from early hops–cannabis graft experiments
  • Unique sessile single-leaf trait
  • Strong purple-to-black pigmentation
  • Distinctive blackberry aroma
  • Excellent outdoor performance in diverse climates
